I've had this painting for a couple of months, and it's been challenging to describe. I jotted down notes, re-read the notes and revised the notes; however, the words were disconnected. I'm struggling with my thoughts even as I type.
Maybe that's why it's "Untitled."
The basics. "Untitled" is 30x40, acrylic on canvas, black and white with hints of pale blue. It's a bit different from the other paintings from Andre Simmons. This piece is my fourth painting by him, but this one had me stunned.
As usual, I was so excited to see the box had been delivered. I sat down with a glass of wine, opened the box and bawled uncontrollably. When I first saw the painting on Instagram, I thought it was beautiful, but it unlocked an emotion I wasn't prepared for in person. I messaged Simmons to tell him about my reaction.
"So glad that you connect with the piece," he said.
I don't think he even understands what came from his creative eye. I see so much in this piece. I assume the figure is a woman from the curve of the hip. The figure is naked and appears in anguish like they are locked in a prison without nourishment, food or otherwise.
The painting is timely and also illustrates something, I think, we've all been dealing with. I can't decide whether it's hopelessness or helplessness. We've witnessed and experienced so much in the past 18 months. These feelings are creating pressure that doesn't seem to be letting up. We're living in a vast powder keg of emotion.
My questions: will it blow, or will the pressure be relieved?
The strokes of the paint and texture details paired with your words, really takes me on a journey of exploring your question at the end.
Wow! I’m speechless! Incredible painting matched with incredible words! This painting has no face, so Im going to say it‘s everyone!! Not a single person on this earth has dodged trails and tribulation.
