The Masks We Wear

I remember wearing masks as a child. It was fun pretending to be someone else, usually a superhero or monster. They never fit quite right, however. The eye holes were off, or the plastic would hurt my face or make my face sweaty.

Even figuratively, masks are uncomfortable. The masks we wear while navigating through life help us get through the day. The forced smile when you want to cuss. The look of interest when you want to roll your eyes. All masks. We wear masks to keep the peace, we have as many masks as hairstyles, makeup and wigs.

This next piece is out of the box for me. Sculptures and statues usually freak me out. I think it's from all of the horror movies with killer dolls and figurines. Remember "Tales from the Hood," with the little dolls running in the kitchen? EEEKK!

Alyssia Gibson's "Perfection Inside Imperfection" is literally perfect. The eyes are closed. The face looks peaceful and relaxed, as if the thoughts behind it are of ocean breezes.
