Pressed without breaking; a metaphor for resilience

"Zen" haunted me for months after artist Pastel Rae posted the image to Instagram in February 2021. At the time, there was no way I could afford it. I would check the site often to see if it was still available.

The Juneteenth Holiday arrived, and she offered a discount for the occasion. Was this my chance? Could I really have the picture? Yes! I couldn't believe it. I messaged her to make sure it was real. She confirmed.

"I'm glad it's going to someone who really wanted it," she said.

The piece is inspired by a black and white photograph of actress Zendaya. The figure dons a fur coat that is feathered and textured to the touch. She's also surrounded by metallic gold.

Gold, the precious metal, is described as attractive in color and brightness, durable to the point of virtual indestructibility, and remains solid under standard conditions. It's both soft and most malleable. It's the least reactive, is exceptionally valuable and unequaled in value.

I'm not sure if she realizes; "Zen" is an illustration of Rae's resilience. The Sacramento native has experienced roadblocks that could have broken her spirit but instead fueled her desire to achieve. She explains on her website how she's started over a few times, with close to nothing, and has come out of her storm with a catalog of beautiful work, a huge following and dedicated collectors.

Thank you, Pastel Rae, for sharing your story and your gift. See more of her work.
