(In Sophia's voice) Picture it...it was December 2019, and I just had major surgery. Often we start thinking about our lives, what we should've done and what we want to do? I decided to begin journaling. The beginning of my journal was a bucket list, you know, buy a Louis Vuitton bag, travel to the Grand Canyon. Well, I included invest in original artwork. Not sure why, but that's what I wanted. The best place to see upcoming artists is IG. There were so many talented black artists. But one, in particular, caught my eye, Tyra Powers. I loved the deep colors and large-scale paintings. Each time I saw a painting, it would have "SOLD" across the image. So I made it my mission to be a "Tyra Powers" collector. The day came sometime in February. I asked if she had a payment plan (art collecting is not cheap). Thankfully she did! I sent my downpayment, excited to have my own original artwork soon.
In the meantime, COVID hit our state. Seriously? A pandemic in Arkansas? Nothing happens here. But sure enough, it was here and was closer than I thought. It was a Tuesday, and my older sister sent a text from the hospital saying, "Pray for your girl." Doctors thought it was pneumonia. She had been sick for approximately a week and was admitted. By Thursday (and my memory may be fuzzy), she was placed on a ventilator. I was terrified. By Saturday, my sister was gone. My heart was broken. Of course, when you grow older, you can grow apart; there's work, kids, marriage...but she was still my sister.
Following her funeral, the painting that I wanted so badly arrived. I tore open the box, and there she was, "Queen" painted by Ms. Powers (pictured below). I broke down in tears. My emotions were already running high from loss, but I actually accomplished something from my list--that was just for me.
Since that first art investment, I've been filling the walls of my home, my office and the offices of others. Now I want to share my investments with others through this blog. I hope all who find themselves on this page will enjoy it.
As for my sister, I miss her every day. She was definitely a go-getter. I know that girl worked at least five jobs! When someone asked why you work so much, she would say she liked to travel. And boy did she travel. She would take the first thing smoking. I believe she lived by the motto "work hard, play harder."
I love her; I miss her. I'm doing my best to live for her.
See more of Tyra's artwork. She's creating some amazing wood cut art with resin.
